Brownsberg Nature Park is a plateau about 500 meters above the Brokopondo reservoir, a couple of hours' drive south of Paramaribo. Forest trails lead to waterfalls, and the plateau's edge opens to views over the lake. Brown capuchin, howler and spider monkeys and many birds live here.
Where to stay
The park operator, STINASU, has rustic lodges at the park headquarters, plus hammock and camping sites. A birding guide describes the lodge it normally uses as very basic, though the balcony view into the canopy is praised. Near the reservoir, Afobaka Resort and Ston Island Lodge are alternatives, and Bergendal Amazonia is a wellness resort in the Brownsweg area.

The road takes about two and a half hours from the capital, and the last stretch is steep, so a 4WD is recommended. Drinking water at the park is not advised, so bring your own. Confirm details with STINASU, as our sources are inconsistent.
