The Commewijne district lies across the Suriname River from Paramaribo and is easily reached by a short ferry or bridge. Its roads pass through former plantations, many dating from the 18th century. Marienburg, a former sugar plantation, has a small museum, and Peperpot, one of the last plantations still close to its original state, has coffee and cocoa plants and a workers' living area. The best way to see it is by river boat or bicycle.
Hotel de Plantage has eight comfortable cottages for two to four people and four two-person apartments. Riverside Bungalows Commewijne in Meerzorg has an outdoor pool and barbecue grills, and Boutique Hotel Peperpot is among the most popular in the district. Details on other plantation stays were hard to confirm.
It is an easy day trip from the capital, but staying a night lets you see the river at dusk and dawn, when dolphins are sometimes spotted. Confirm that each property is open before you book.
