Cádiz

Cádiz has been continuously inhabited for some 3,000 years. Its old town fills a narrow peninsula almost entirely surrounded by the Atlantic, with watchtowers rising above the rooftops, a golden-domed cathedral and long sandy beaches within walking distance of the center.
The old town's barrios, Santa María, El Pópulo and La Viña, hold the city's small hotels in 17th- and 18th-century houses. La Viña is the place for fried fish and flamenco, and La Caleta, the old town's beach, is famous for its sunsets.
Cádiz's carnival in February is one of the biggest in Spain. Sherry country, around Jerez, is a short train ride away.
