Seville is the heart of Andalusia, and its old center is made for small hotels. Behind plain walls in the Santa Cruz and Alfalfa quarters are courtyard houses with orange trees, tiled fountains and roof terraces looking out at the Giralda. Many of the city's best boutique hotels were once palaces or merchants' homes.
Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter beside the cathedral and the Alcázar, is the classic choice. The streets around Alfalfa and the Plaza de la Encarnación are livelier and full of tapas bars, while Triana, across the river, is known for its ceramics and flamenco.
Seville is one of the hottest cities in Europe in summer, often above 40°C in July and August. Spring, with its Holy Week processions and April Fair, and autumn are the best times to visit. A rooftop pool is worth looking for.
