Menorca is the quietest of the large Balearic Islands, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with turquoise coves, stone walls and prehistoric monuments. Its two towns could hardly be more different: Mahón, the capital, sits above one of the world's largest natural harbors, while Ciutadella in the west is a former capital full of palaces and Gothic churches.
Both Mahón and Ciutadella have small hotels in restored townhouses and mansions. For a slower pace, the island's agroturismos, working or former farm estates, offer pools, gardens and countryside views.
The Camí de Cavalls, a historic path, runs all the way around the island's coast and connects many of its best beaches. The season runs from May to October.
