Granada
A 16th-century mansion turned sleek boutique hotel, keeping its original wood-beamed ceilings.
Granada is home to the Alhambra, the great Nasrid palace complex that overlooks the city from its hilltop, and to the Albaicín, the old Moorish quarter across the valley. The Albaicín's whitewashed lanes and walled gardens, called cármenes, hold many of the city's most atmospheric small hotels: restored 15th- and 16th-century houses built around patios with fountains and wooden galleries.
The lower Albaicín and Paseo de los Tristes, along the Darro river, are close to both the Alhambra and the city center. Higher up, the views are better but the walk is steep. The center around the cathedral is flatter and more convenient for restaurants.
Alhambra tickets sell out weeks ahead, so book them before your trip. Tapas still come free with drinks in many of Granada's bars.
