Tulbagh, about 90 minutes from Cape Town, is enclosed on three sides by mountains. After an earthquake in 1969 its historic Church Street was carefully restored, giving it one of the largest concentrations of Cape Dutch heritage buildings in the country. The valley produces wine, sparkling wine and fruit, and its farms offer tastings, walks and long lunches.
Choose between heritage houses in the village and guest farms on wine and fruit estates.
Tulbagh is quieter than Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, with snow sometimes dusting the mountains in winter.
