Toraja (Sulawesi)
A hotel with a pool and garden whose staff help arrange guides to Torajan culture.
Tana Toraja, in the mountains of South Sulawesi, is known for its tongkonan houses with sweeping, saddle-shaped roofs, its rice terraces and its elaborate funeral ceremonies, which can last for days. Cliffside graves guarded by wooden effigies and hanging tombs make for remarkable walks through the countryside.
Rantepao is the main base, with simple hotels and guesthouses. Hire a local guide to understand the ceremonies and visit respectfully.
Toraja is a long drive from Makassar, or a short flight to the local airport. Funeral season peaks from July to September.
