Yogyakarta, or Jogja, is the cultural capital of Java. Its sultan still lives in the walled kraton palace, and the city is known for batik, silverwork, shadow puppetry and a lively student and art scene. Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist monument, and the Hindu temples of Prambanan lie within an hour's drive.
Prawirotaman, south of the kraton, has small hotels, cafés and galleries. The countryside around Borobudur has some exceptional retreats among rice fields and volcanoes.
Sunrise at Borobudur requires a special ticket. Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, looms north of the city.
