Mount Bromo is an active volcano inside the Tengger caldera, surrounded by a 'sea of sand' and overlooked by Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak. Before dawn, jeeps climb to viewpoints such as Penanjakan to watch the sun light up the volcanoes, after which visitors cross the sand to climb to Bromo's crater rim.

Villages on the caldera rim, such as Cemoro Lawang and Ngadisari, are closest to the viewpoints; accommodation is mostly simple, with a few newer resorts.
