Lake Toba
Simple, clean bungalows right on the water.
Lake Toba is the largest lake in Southeast Asia, formed by a colossal volcanic eruption some 74,000 years ago. Samosir, an island about the size of Singapore, sits in the middle, home to the Batak people, their carved boat-shaped houses and ancient stone tombs. The water is cool and clear, and the pace is slow.
Tuk Tuk, on Samosir's peninsula, has most of the guesthouses and small resorts, many with their own swimming jetties.
Fly to Silangit or Medan and take the ferry from Parapat. Accommodation is simple and good value.
