Where to stay in Udaipur

02

Jagat Niwas Palace

Udaipur

A seventeenth-century lakeside haveli in the old town, with carved windows and rooms opening onto the water.

03

RAAS Devigarh

Udaipur

A restored eighteenth-century hilltop fort-palace in the Aravalli hills, about 30 km from the city.

Udaipur wraps around Lake Pichola, and its best small hotels are old havelis and palaces on the water or in the lanes behind the City Palace. Rooftop terraces look over white marble domes, the lake and the Aravalli hills, and at sunset the whole city turns gold.

Where to stay

The Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat area on the old-town side of the lake is the most atmospheric, with havelis a short walk from the City Palace. For something grander, a palace on the lake or a country estate half an hour out of town gives more space and quiet.

Good to know

Winter, from October to March, is the pleasant season; summer is very hot. Lake-view rooms are worth the extra, and many hotels run their own boats and cooking classes.
