The Mani is the central of the Peloponnese's three southern prongs, a dry, rocky land whose people were famous for their independence and their family feuds, fought from fortified stone towers. Villages like Vathia and Areopoli still bristle with them, and many have been restored as guesthouses. The coast has small harbors, swimming coves and the Diros caves, explored by boat.
Areopoli and Limeni in the north are good bases, while the deeper Mani toward Gerolimenas and Cape Tainaron is wilder and quieter.
A car is essential. Kardamyli and Stoupa on the outer Mani are greener and gentler. Spring brings wildflowers; summer is hot.
