Hydra has no cars or scooters; donkeys and water taxis do the work. Its harbor town is a perfect amphitheater of gray stone mansions built by wealthy sea captains in the 18th and 19th centuries, and artists, musicians and writers, Leonard Cohen among them, have been drawn here for decades. Swimming is from rocks and small pebble coves reached on foot or by boat.
All the best small hotels are in or just above the harbor town, many in restored mansions with courtyards.
Hydra is about two hours from Piraeus by fast ferry, making it an easy escape from Athens. Expect stairs everywhere; porters with donkeys meet the boats. Summer art exhibitions add to the appeal.
