Peleliu is a small island at the southern end of Palau, about a two-hour boat ride from Koror, and the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Pacific War in 1944. Rusting tanks, caves, airfield remains and memorials lie in the jungle, and the surrounding waters have some of Palau's best dive and snorkel sites, including the Peleliu Wall and Orange Beach. Life here is slow and community-focused.
Dolphin Bay Resort is the main property, with a restaurant, bar and cafe, complimentary breakfast and rooms from about $75 a night, though rates vary. There are also small, budget-minded guesthouses, including the Adventures Guesthouse, a converted church with four rooms and a small guesthouse on the main street, and Antelope Guesthouse.
The island's electricity may flicker and internet is spotty. Many visitors come on day trips from Koror, as on the National WWII Museum's tours from Palau Pacific Resort. Check current availability with the properties.
