Banda Islands

A Dutch colonial-style hotel on Banda Neira, widely considered the islands' best stay, with the best restaurant around.

The tiny Banda Islands, deep in the Maluku sea, were the center of the spice trade for centuries and were fought over by Dutch and English traders. Banda Neira has colonial mansions, nutmeg plantations and the star-shaped Fort Belgica, facing the volcano of Gunung Api across a narrow channel. The reefs, including fields of coral on old lava flows, are superb.

Where to stay

Accommodation on Banda Neira is in small guesthouses and heritage hotels in old colonial houses.
