Stykkishólmur is the largest town on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a colorful fishing harbor with tidy old houses, a little lighthouse and the ferry to the Westfjords. Boat trips among the Breiðafjörður islands go in search of puffins and sea eagles.
Hótel Egilsen is the strongest recommendation, a converted 1867 family home of ten rooms with nautical décor and views over Breiðafjörður bay. Hotel Fransiskus, a former monastery, has harbor views and a terrace. Hótel Búðir lies outside town, on the wild south coast of the peninsula.
The town is a convenient base for the Kirkjufell mountain and Snæfellsnes national park. Scallop and shellfish menus appear in local restaurants. Summer is busy and winter is quiet, with good northern lights.
