Mount Pelion rises above the city of Volos in central Greece, a green peninsula of chestnut, beech and plane trees, and mythology's home of the centaurs. Its villages of slate-roofed mansions, such as Makrinitsa and Tsagarada, are linked by cobbled mule paths, and its coastline has sandy beaches on the Aegean side and calm coves on the Pagasetic Gulf.
Hotels in restored mansions are scattered through the mountain villages; Afissos and the gulf coast suit beach stays.
The Pelion is about four hours from Athens. It is a year-round destination, with skiing in winter, hiking in spring and autumn and beaches in summer. A car is essential.
