Zagreb
A Secession-style building on Strossmayer Square, one of the city's oldest hotels.
Croatia's capital is a city of cafés, museums and green squares, with a medieval Upper Town above a Habsburg-era lower town. Its hotels range from a historic Orient Express-era grand hotel to compact contemporary places.
The lower town around Zrinjevac and the main railway station is central and walkable. Gornji Grad, the Upper Town, is atmospheric and quiet but hillier, and the area around Tkalčićeva street has restaurants and bars.
Zagreb is quieter than the coast in summer and is a good base for the Advent markets. It's a short train or bus ride to Plitvice and the Slovenian border.
