Where to stay in Split

Split grew up inside the walls of the palace that the Roman emperor Diocletian built around 300 AD, and its old town is still a labyrinth of marble passages, cafés and small hotels. Several heritage hotels occupy townhouses within or beside the palace.

Where to stay

The old town is the most atmospheric base, though lanes can be noisy at night. Varoš, just to the west, is a quieter fishermen's quarter, and the seafront Riva and the area near Bačvice beach have a more open, modern feel.

Good to know

Split is the main ferry hub for Hvar, Brač and Vis, so it's a natural first stop for an island trip. Visit the palace cellars early before tour groups arrive.
