The Whitsundays are 74 islands scattered off the Queensland coast, best known for Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef nearby. Where to stay

Hamilton Island is the easiest base, with its own airport, marina and ferries to the other islands. Sailing charters are the alternative for those who want to move between bays.

The dry season (May to October) is the best time; the wet season and stinger season run from about November to May. Seaplane and helicopter flights to the reef are popular.
