Sepik River · 9 rooms
A river cruiser built in Lae in 1989 with nine air-conditioned cabins, working the Karawari, Krosmeri and Blackwater villages.
The Sepik is one of the longest rivers in Papua New Guinea, winding across a lowland of swamp, grassland and rainforest, and the heartland of a carving tradition of masks, ancestor figures and haus tambaran spirit houses. Villages stand along its banks and oxbow lakes, and travel is by motorized canoe.
Karawari Lodge sits on a ridge beside the Karawari River, a tributary of the Sepik, with ten separate cottages built from local materials inspired by traditional architecture and a main building shaped like a spirit house. Despite the remoteness it has 220-volt electricity, hot and cold water and mosquito-netted beds. The Sepik Spirit is a river cruiser with nine air-conditioned cabins, each with a private bathroom, working the Karawari, Krosmeri and Blackwater villages.
Both are run by Trans Niugini Tours and reached only by charter flight to the Karawari airstrip from Mount Hagen and other lodges. Check current schedules and official travel advice.
