Mount Hagen is the main town of the Western Highlands, a cool, busy market center at 1,700 meters in a valley of coffee, tea and sweet potato gardens. It hosts the Mount Hagen Cultural Show, one of the country's great gatherings, in which tribes in feathers, paint and wigs perform sing-sings. It is also the gateway to the birds of paradise of the surrounding forests and the departure point for charter flights to remote lodges.
Mt Hagen Missionary Home, on Kuminga Road, was named a Lonely Planet top choice and is family-friendly with a bar and laundry. Hotel Poroman is another top choice with friendly staff and gardens. Highlander Hotel & Apartments is a 3.5-star property with a spa and pool. Malolo Plantation Lodge is a small, superior tourist-class property with 14 rooms.
The festival is held in August in some years, so confirm dates. Check official travel advice, as tribal conflict affects some highland areas, and travel with a local operator.
