Makgadikgadi Pans
A rustic lodge near Gweta, on the road to the pans.
The Makgadikgadi Pans are the remains of a huge ancient lake, now a shimmering white salt flat that spreads to the horizon. At the edges, grassland and baobabs support meerkats, brown hyenas and, after the rains, zebra and wildebeest migrations.
Camps here are tented and classic in style, with activities such as quad biking across the pans, walking with Bushmen and sleeping out under the stars.
The pans are best visited from May to October, since the rains make some areas impassable. Nights can be cold in winter.
