Ha Giang is Vietnam's far north, a region of limestone mountains, terraced fields and dramatic passes. Stays are mostly family homestays and small ecolodges, built of wood, bamboo and rammed earth.

Where to stay

Dong Van's old quarter and the villages along the loop have the best atmosphere. Book ahead for the better lodges.

Good to know

The buckwheat flowers bloom in autumn, and the rice terraces turn gold in September. The roads are steep, so ride only if you are experienced.
