Galle
A heritage boutique hotel with ocean-view rooftop terraces, within walking distance of the fort.
Galle Fort is a walled Dutch town on a headland, with whitewashed lanes, a lighthouse and ramparts that look out to the Indian Ocean. Many of its old merchant houses are now boutique hotels, with courtyards, verandas and rooftop terraces.
Staying inside the fort lets you walk to the cafes, galleries and shops, and along the ramparts at sunset. Hotels just outside offer pools and beach access.
The best time is December to April. Book early for peak season, and bring a hat for the sun on the ramparts.
