Alleppey (Kerala Backwaters)
A luxury houseboat for the backwaters, with two-bedroom options.
The backwaters around Alleppey form a maze of lagoons, canals and rice paddies, and the best way to enjoy them is from a small property on the water. Traditional wooden houseboats called kettuvallams are the classic choice, while lakeside villas and old family homes give a more settled stay.
Alleppey itself is the hub, but many of the finest stays lie on the shores of Vembanad Lake near Kumarakom, a short drive east. Choose a place with its own boat, so you can slip out at dawn when the water is still.
The cooler months from November to February are the best. Boat quality varies widely, so book a trusted operator and ask about overnight cruises.
