United Arab Emirates by setting
The United Arab Emirates is best known for its glass towers, but the country also has a quieter side: coral-stone houses in the old creek quarters, desert retreats among enormous dunes, and mountain and island lodges that feel a world away.
The big two
Dubai and Abu Dhabi lead the list. Dubai has the biggest choice of design-led hotels, from palm-fringed beach retreats to stays in the old Al Fahidi quarter. Abu Dhabi is more cultural, with the Louvre on Saadiyat Island and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
The northern emirates
Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah are quieter and more traditional. Ras Al Khaimah has the strongest hotel offering, with desert villa resorts and Jebel Jais, the highest peak.
Desert, mountain and island
Liwa Oasis and its dunes, Hatta's mountain dam, Al Ain's oasis and Sir Bani Yas Island's wildlife reserve each give a night or two away from the coast.
When to go
November to March is the best time. Summer is very hot and humid, though hotel rates drop sharply.
