Longyearbyen (Svalbard)
A small hotel in a former bank building, with a small dining space.
Longyearbyen is the world's northernmost real town, a coal-mining settlement in Svalbard where polar bears roam beyond the town edge and the sun does not rise in winter or set in summer. It has museums, a seed vault and decent restaurants.
Funken Lodge is the best-known boutique hotel, on a hill near the center with a sauna, spa and bar. Mary-Ann's Polarrigg has individually decorated Arctic-themed rooms. The Vault, in a former bank, is a small hotel with a dining room. Basecamp Hotel is trapper-themed, with no TVs and a communal lounge.
A rifle is required outside town, so book guided tours for hikes and snowmobile trips. Check whether saunas are open. Fly via Oslo or Tromsø. Check official travel advice and weather before going.
