Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort lies in the Saariselkä fell region, 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, and grew from a roadside restaurant into one of Finland's best-known winter destinations. Its glass igloos have heated roofs for stargazing, and a snow igloo village is built every winter.
The resort itself offers glass igloos, Kelo-glass igloos, traditional log cabins and snow igloos for the more adventurous, plus two restaurants, a glass igloo bar and what is billed as the world's largest smoke sauna. It is a large resort in places, though still family-run. Nearby, Wilderness Hotel Inari and Octola, a high-end wilderness lodge, are alternatives.
Book a year ahead for Christmas and aurora weeks. The area is dark by early afternoon in December, and the midnight sun lights the summer.
